TRIP TO INDONESIA

Our trip to Indonesia started right after Singapore (read my article HERE). We were looking for nature, relaxation, a bit of the unknown and adventure and I can tell you right away that we found all of them!

OVERVIEW OF INDONESIA

If you are planning your trip to Indonesia, here is some general information

Indonesia is a huge archipelago made up of more than 17,000 islands. There are 5 major islands: Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan (the Indonesian part of Borneo), New Guinea and Sulawesi.

It has about 270 million inhabitants which makes it the fourth most populous state in the world right after the United States.

Numerous ethnic, linguistic and religious groups coexist in Indonesia and it is indeed a very colorful state.

Likewise, its landscapes are also among the most varied: you can admire volcanoes, coral reefs, deserted islands and densely populated cities.

The whole Indonesian territory is at high seismic risk since it is located on three different tectonic plates (Pacific, Eurasian and Australian) and is dotted with active volcanoes, so much so that it is called The Ring of Fire. While planning your trip to Indonesia, remember to inform yourself about anomalous seismic activity in the areas you will visit!

GENERAL INFORMATION

The current currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

To simplify the calculations and get an idea of the costs that I will list in the article, remember that 1 Euro is worth about 15,000 IDR and 1 million rupees are just under 70 euros.

Internet: there are different operators and different types of offers. I always recommend to buy a local SIM card, but do not buy it at the airport but to do it in the city instead, so as to compare the various offers and save some money.

RAJA AMPAT

Our trip to Indonesia started in one of the most magnificent and unspoiled places in the world. An archipelago in the far east of Indonesia in West Papua, surrounded by the green of the forest and the immense blue of the ocean.

It is one of the last paradises on earth when it comes to biodiversity and is one of the few places in the world where biodiversity is on the rise, despite all the climate and environmental problems we are experiencing.

In this place we have rediscovered contact and life in harmony with nature. Everything is decided the night before or the same morning according to the ocean and the wind, no programs and no forcing.

HOW TO GET TO RAJA AMPAT AND HOW TO MOVE AROUND

The best, and one of the only ways, to get to Raja Ampat is to take a plane to Sorong and then the ferry to Waisai, the main island of Raja Ampat.

From here you will have to arrange the transfer with your “hotel” who will organize the transport.

Most of the time they will meet you at the port to continue the journey on a long boat, while if you spend the first few nights on the same island, they will pick you up by car.

However, I strongly recommend that you arrange these transfers in advance by calling the property or by sending an email (which they don’t always read or answer). Differently arranged private transfers can be very expensive, even by “Western standards”.

Note: you will have to pay a fee of approximately € 70 per person to enter the Raja Ampat marine park. Better to bring cash (1 million rupees each).

WHAT TO DO IN RAJA AMPAT

Obviously, if you have done all this effort to get here, you have to love snorkeling and diving!
Most of the structures organize diving, but if this is your main goal I recommend you to look for a Dive Resort, as they are more reliable and the guides are more prepared with reliable material.

It is also possible to organize excursions for trekking and bird watching, especially on the island of Waigeo (the main one)

Definitely worth noting is the island of Pianemo, at the western end of Raja Ampat, from which you can admire an incredible view!
I recommend that you organize the transfer in time, perhaps in the main port because otherwise it could get really expensive!

WHERE TO SLEEP IN RAJA AMPAT

All accommodations in Raja Ampat are really simple. Forget 5-star hotels (even 3…) and get ready to regain contact with nature.

I must admit, however, that, except for the initial impact, we loved Raja Ampat’s kind of life and we did not miss any “comfort” we were used to.

Nature and freedom, day and night…
I assure you it is magnificent!

As I said before, I recommend staying at a Dive Resort, which are usually nicer and with better services (and often even a little more expensive than Homestays)

We slept HERE and talking to other guests it was already a comfortable accommodation.

LOMBOK

After more than 14 hours of travel and displacements, we arrived in Lombok.
We just crossed the island and slept, so I don’t have much to tell you about it.
I can tell you that the signs of last year’s earthquake are still visible and people are still very scarred too.

We moved the next morning to the Gili Islands which are less than 10 minutes by boat from the island of Lombok (obviously it depends on which port you are leaving from)

GILI AIR

We chose Gili Air, because everyone said that Gili Trawangan is the most lively and youthful one, Gili Meno is the quietest one for those seeking relaxation, while Gili Air is a good middle ground, but above all it is the most authentic one.

The southern part (near the port) is certainly the busiest area, where most of the clubs and activities are located. Obviously it is also the part where most of the boats arrive so they “spoil” the atmosphere of a remote island a little.

The northernmost part is instead quieter, from where you can admire magnificent sunsets. If there are no clouds, you can also see the island of Bali very well in the distance.

One of the things we liked most about the Gilis is the total absence of cars. On the island you can travel on foot, by bicycle or aboard nice buggies pulled by little horses that are a little tired and cooked by the sun.

The roads are obviously not the best in terms of accessibility. Along the coast, some parts have sand, the asphalt is a bit bumpy and the inner roads are often dirt. All in all we got away with the suitcases (with no little effort) and after all the island is very small and you cross from side to side in about 20 minutes, so walking around the island remains, in my opinion, the best way to get around.

Here too the watchwords are: snorkeling, diving and relaxation. You can organize excursions anywhere on the island, just enter one of the many diving centers or agencies to negotiate the best price.

If you go snorkeling, they will probably propose you to use the boat with the Glass Bottom which is essentially a small glass on the floor through which you can see the bottom of the sea, but you will almost never see anything. So in case they ask you for a supplement, kindly decline as it is not worth your money

In addition to this you can take Indonesian cooking classes (there is a place at the beginning of the main street near the port), do some shopping in the little shops, there is a cinema at night on the beach just before Mowie’s with armchairs and covers

It is also possible to organize tours for the island of Komodo, usually of 4 days and 3 nights, directly from here.

SCUBA DIVING IN GILI AIR

Indonesia is one of the places with the largest marine biodiversity in the world, so you can see an infinite number of marine species that you can only dream of in other places.

On the island there are many Diving Centers and it is possible to organize dives of all kinds, for all levels (even for those like me who had never even done a dive before) and also organize courses and licenses.

I recommend without a doubt the Oceans5dive diving center, very easy to find because it is practically in front of the port ticket office.

In addition to being very professional and prepared, they are also the only DDI (Disabled Divers International) center in all of Indonesia!

This means that they specialize in diving with people with any disability. With me they were really good and I can’t really complain about anything and so… I did my first dive!

It was truly magnificent and we also managed to see a beautiful sea turtle and a very rare Blu Ring Octopus, and everyone envied me because apparently it is very rare and it is also the most poisonous animal in the whole ocean …

WHERE TO EAT IN GILI AIR

Any Time: for a coffee or breakfast, it’s just outside the Oceans5 diving center, opposite the port ticket office.
Mowie’s: in the southwest of the island, perfect for lunch, dinner and after dinner. There is great music in front of the beach and it has really good wi-fi… which can always come in handy! Bring a sweater because in the evening the breeze gets up and it gets a bit chilly.

WHERE TO SLEEP IN GILI AIR

Dive Resorts are generally beautiful and reliable, slightly more expensive, but when we tried to save we found the room (and the suitcases!!!) full of ants!

You can ask them directly regarding the excursions and diving. There are often many Westerners in the staff, I leave it to you to decide if this is a pro or a con.

HOW TO GO TO BALI FROM THE GILI ISLANDS

There are daily boats bound for Lombok and Bali.

Important advice: do not go upstairs in case there is rough sea because for us it was really a nightmare (despite the nice picture!): we washed ourselves completely for the waves, it was very cold and we struggled to stay still while sitting!! Fortunately, a group of Italians rescued us and hosted us in the front area where much less spray arrived. In any case, the ones downstairs have almost all vomited so… it’s up to you!

If, on the other hand, the sea is calm, I recommend that you go upstairs.

For Bali they leave at 11 am and 3 pm and the journey takes about 2 hours. The ticket costs 300,000 rupees each (€ 20) and includes a mini bus transfer to major destinations such as Kuta, Ubud, Denpassar and the airport.

We decided to take the car to Kuta (which is more than an hour and a half from the port) for 400 thousand rupees (€ 25).

BALI

We have already visited in Bali in 2015, so we just decided to spend a night in Kuta since it is only 15 minutes from the airport.

YOGYAKARTA

The last stop on our trip to Indonesia is Yogyakarta (which is read Giogiacarta) or for the locals Jogja.

Yogyakarta is the cultural and artistic center of the island of Java. The city and the surrounding area are full of attractions to visit.

As soon as you arrive in the city you will encounter the typical Indonesian traffic, although I must admit that we were quite lucky.

The city center is quite small and you can therefore walk around without problems.

Otherwise you can move around thanks to one of the characteristic rickshaws, if you can find an awake driver…

We only spent one night in Yogya and one of the most characteristic activities is definitely walking along Malioboro Street at night and tasting the street food it fills up with when the sun goes down.

There are two temples, Borobudur and Prambanan, which are definitely a must and if you have come to Yogyakarta, you are almost certainly here for the two of them.

You will find plenty of tours departing from every point and hotel in the city to see Borobudur and Prambanan.

The prices for a 10-hour tour with private car and driver are around 500 thousand rupees (about € 30), while for 5 hours about 300 thousand rupees (about € 20).

You can then visit the two temples on the same day, but personally I recommend that you organize two excursions on two different days to see Borobudur at sunrise and Prambanan at sunset.

You can then add some other activities along the way or stop to admire the landscape somewhere.

BOROBUDUR

Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in all of Indonesia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is a huge temple with a square base, made up of over 1 million and 600 thousand giant stone blocks and on its walls there are stories of Buddha.

Surely the best time to visit Borobudur is at sunrise, so it will mean leaving Yogyakarta early, very early! Just to give you an idea we left at 3:45 am, but I assure you it’s absolutely worth it!!

The cost is 475 thousand rupees (about € 30) and a hearty breakfast is included if you choose to go at dawn.

There is a small discount if you are a student, so remember to have a card with you to prove it!

Accessibility: Unfortunately, Borobudur is completely inaccessible. To get to the top, the only way is the steps (among other things very high and a bit slippery). In some moments it can be a bit crowded, so be very careful!

PRAMBANAN

Prambanan is a Hindu temple complex not far from Yogyakarta.

Although there are many temples, many of which unfortunately were destroyed over the centuries, the three main temples can still be visited in all their glory.

You can climb to the top (via steps only) and look down on the complex and stroll around the temples.

This time I recommend you to visit Prambanan at sunset because the colors and the atmosphere are truly priceless! We usually leave Yogyakarta at 3 pm to be in time for sunset which is usually around 5 pm

The ticket costs 350 thousand rupees (about € 20) and can be paid directly by debit or credit card, without supplements.

Accessibility: the road to reach the base of the complex is partially accessible. You can notice that they have tried to make it accessible via walkways and ramps, but unfortunately close to the complex it is no longer accessible and the only access is via a somewhat bumpy road and steps!

CONCLUSIONI

Our trip to Indonesia was truly a discovery, an adventure, we immersed ourselves completely in nature, forgetting the usual rhythms and habits, we found very kind people, magnificent places, the sea is truly sensational, but above all what is under the sea that is truly breathtaking.

I therefore recommend this trip to all lovers of the ocean, scuba diving, hiking and walking lovers because we have discovered that the hinterland of these islands is also full of wonders.

I also recommend it to all those who love adventure a bit, visit temples lost in time and imagine being a little Indiana Jones in one of his adventures.

I assure you that you will not be disappointed with your trip!

KAUNERTAL

Are you looking for a place to relax, enjoy the mountains with its landscapes and hikes even if you are in a wheelchair or have problems walking for long distances?

Well guys … I have the perfect solution for you: the KAUNERTAL.

INTRODUCTION

We have organized our trip to the Kaunertal valley with the Tirol Werbung the Regional Tourist Office of the Austrian Tirol.

During our four-day stay we explored the area, stayed in a fully accessible hotel and reached the top of not one, but two mountains in a fully accessible manner.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Kaunertal is a small valley on the Austrian side of Tirol. It is located at an altitude of about 1200 meters above sea level and can be easily reached by car from Italy passing through Switzerland or continuing north from Bolzano.

It is a very quiet valley where you will not find crowds of tourists or queues at restaurants and where you can spend your holidays in relax and tranquility.

WHAT TO DO IN KAUNERTAL

The main attractions of Kaunertal are certainly its mountains and the possibility of exploring them even for people with disabilities.

In fact, many hikes have roads wide enough to be traveled in a wheelchair without problems and others have been made accessible thanks to the use of wooden walkways and paths along the entire route.

It is possible to explore the area by bike, handbike or with an electric wheel without problems and it is possible to rent the equipment directly on the spot.

One of the main attractions is the Kaunertal glacier which can be reached by car and for the last part with a cable car, it goes without saying that everything is accessible!

WHERE TO SLEEP IN KAUNERTAL

This time I want to tell you about the hotel that hosted us first of all, because it is the center and the beating heart of accessible activities in the valley.

The Weisseespitze hotel is the largest hotel in the area, complete with restaurant, spa and covered indoor parking, but what makes this hotel special is the attention it has paid over the years to people with disabilities.

Not only does it have many accessible rooms, but it is constantly updating its spaces, making them more and more accessible and conceiving them in such a way that they are usable for everyone.

How many hotels have you visited that have raised the entire floor to make the bar counter the right height?

Or how many spas have you seen with the lift to get in and out of the tubs without problems?

But the services that impressed us the most of all concern accessible outdoor activities.

In fact, the Weisseespitze hotel offers its guests the possibility to rent handbikes, Swiss Trac (which I will tell you more in a minute) and electric front wheels.

In this way everyone can fully enjoy the magnificent hikes, bike rides or simply wander the surroundings of the valley more comfortably.

All this means that many people with disabilities (and not, of course) choose it as a starting point for their excursions.

If you decide to stay here, I recommend that you choose the half-board option, as the dinner is excellent, the menu changes every day and you will not have to look for a restaurant around the valley.

THE SPA

The Weisseespitze hotel has a spa reserved for adults complete with swimming pools, saunas at different temperatures and an outdoor swimming pool for sunny days.

There is also a massage and wellness center.

But I remind you that in Austria it is customary to enter the sauna without clothes or bikini.

ACCESSIBLE HIKES

The Kaunertal valley offers hundreds of paths and hikes, for all tastes and difficulty levels.

We have obviously focused on the more accessible attractions and will tell you about our experience below.

ADLERBLICK

It is a beautiful platform from which it is possible to admire the whole valley from above.

The hike leading to the platform is not accessible by wheelchair, but it is possible to reach it by car without any problems and park a few meters from the platform.

There are parking slots reserved exclusively for people with disabilities, but not a lot, so I advise you to choose a time that is not excessively crowded (even if in general the valley is very quiet and you will never find crowds).

VERPEILHUTTE

It is a refuge just above 2000 meters high at the foot of peaks over 3000 meters high.

It can be reached with a walk of about 40 minutes from the car park which you can easily reach by car.

Usually it would have been a real undertaking to reach it (and often impossible), but we managed to get there without problems (and no, Andrea didn’t carry me all the time).

We used the Swiss Trac made available at the Weisseespitze hotel for its guests and so we reached the summit effortlessly or at least with the right effort of those who take a 40-minute walk at 2000 meters…

THE SWISS TRAC

For to be clear we could define the Swiss Trac as a kind of mini tractor that attaches itself in front of the wheelchair and pulls you up the path, even for very steep sections, with stones, earth or grass.

It runs on batteries and we went all the way to the top and down and the battery was still fully charged, so you shouldn’t have any problems on even the longest walks.

We also crossed a couple of streams, walked around the meadows and of course did the whole uphill and downhill ride.

In points where the ground is particularly soft, the wheels tend to skid a little and it is more difficult to go downhill than uphill as the inclination of the Swiss Trac is more favorable when climbing.

The Swiss Trac is quite heavy, so if you want to go for a walk alone you won’t be able to load and unload it from the car, but you can ask for a ramp to help you get it into the car with the help of another person.

I enjoyed this walk, but above all it gave me the opportunity to take a walk in the mountains in an easy and carefree way and guys… it hasn’t happened to me for almost 9 years.

I don’t add anything else!

KAUNERGRAT NATIONAL PARK

On rainy days or for lovers of local flora and fauna, I also recommend a small but characteristic museum where you can find lots of information about the Kaunertal valley and the Kaunergrat mountain range.

On clear days, I especially recommend having lunch on the rooftop terrace from which you will have a magnificent view of the valley.

There is also a beautiful playground for families and children.

PILLER MOOR HIKE

Piller Moor ranks first for the most accessible hike for people with disabilities.

A 5-minute drive from the Kaunergrat Natural Park begins this beautiful walk that has been made accessible thanks to long wooden walkways on which you can enter the forest and walk without problems in the woods.

Only the first part (less than 5 minutes) is a bit uphill with the dirt road, but it is quite wide and it is quite beaten.

95% of this walk is completely wheelchair accessible.

Recommended!

THE GLACIER ROAD

Probably one of the main attractions of Kaunertal is the Glacier Road and its glacier.

During the ski season it is obviously a destination for many sports and snow lovers (even in wheelchairs thanks to the brand new lifts and cable cars), while in the summer it is still possible to reach the top of the glacier.

We drove up to about 2700 meters and from there we took the cable car that took us up to about 3150 meters, right on the top of the mountain on which the border with Italy is located.

You can literally put one foot in Italy and one foot in Austria on top of a mountain.

At the start of the cable car there is a huge structure that contains the bathrooms and a restaurant, very large and fully accessible.

Admission to Glacier Road costs € 25 for each car and up to 5 people and also includes the ticket to go up to the top with the cable car.

As you go back down, remember to stop at the beginning of the lake to take a picture, you won’t forget it.

IN THE SURROUNDINGS OF KAUNERTAL

For those wishing to vary a little the activities here is what we recommend.

AREA 47

Are you the eternal undecided between the beach and mountains?

Area 47 is then the perfect place with you.

It is about 40 minutes from the Weisseespitze hotel and is a huge water/adventure park.

There are water slides, climbing walls (on the swimming pool), adventure park, sports fields, rafting and of course… a cable park for wakeboarding!

Perfect for spending a day “at the sea” even when you are in the mountains.

INNSBRUCK

For those wishing to visit some cities, Innsbruck is only about an hour from the Kaunertal valley.

We went there during the Christmas holidays a few years ago and we have wonderful memories of this city. Small, but very beautiful and characteristic

SOMETHING YOU CAN’T FIND ON GOOGLE

On the first day we asked our guide for some activity or experience to do in Kaunertal that was not found on Google.

The next day he proposed a visit to a local distillery that produces liqueurs and in particular Schnapps, a local grappa.

The distillery is called Holderli and has been producing liqueurs for three generations.

For lovers and connoisseurs it is a stop not to be missed. For everyone else well … if it’s cold you know how to warm up.

Among other things, traditionally you have to drink three shots: one for the right leg, one for the left and the third to balance!

I’ll put the position here because in fact… it’s not on Google!

CONCLUSIONS

In one word I could define this holiday: unexpected!

Finally, after almost 9 years, being able to take a walk in the mountains peacefully gave me an unexpected joy.

You have to know that it is something I used to love and with my family we used to go very often.

Before this holiday I had never found a way to do it except with a thousand problems or organizing everything with the utmost precision, things that certainly make the experience less pleasant.

That’s why I really feel like recommending the Kaunertal to all people in wheelchairs or who have difficulty walking who want to fully enjoy their time in the mountains, the experiences and activities that can be done.

A WEEKEND IN NICE

A weekend in Nice means playing it safe, relaxing and seeing the magnificent landscape of the French Riviera.

As soon as you set foot in Nice, you immediately realize you are on the French coast. You can immediately recognized by the number of bars and boulangeries and the smell of the baguette.

Nice is beautiful and refined, characterized by the bright colors of the French Riviera.

WHAT TO DO AND WHAT TO SEE IN NICE FOR 3 DAYS

La Promenade des Anglais
Historical Center of Nice

LA PROMENADE DES ANGLAIS

Everyone has heard of the famous Promenade des Anglais.

The promenade along the seafront, where you will continuously see couples strolling, people jogging and boys going on roller blades and skateboards, is 7 km long.

It extends from the Castle Hill to Nice airport.

On this walk you can admire both the historic center of Nice and the luxury hotel Negresco.

An advice? Rent a bicycle to travel the whole Promenade des Anglais and enjoy the view.

HISTORICAL CENTER OF NICE

The historic center of Nice is characterized by small colorful alleys from which characteristic shops emerge.

The most beautiful feature of its old town is its Cours Saleya market, Nice’s famous flea market and flower market which takes place every morning except on Mondays.

At the flea market in Nice you can really find everything, moreover it is very popular with both tourists and locals. Nice’s flower market is crazy, full of magnificent smells and colors.

Plus it’s full of little restaurants on all sides of the market! Yum…

CASTLE HILL

You can admire the Castle Hill from the Nice seafront, but you should definitely go to the top to see the beautiful botanical garden that develops in height.

This is the perfect place for a picnic, perhaps after you’ve done your shopping at the market below. In addition, in an instant the atmosphere will change and you will find yourself from the beach in a medieval style village!

THE LIBERATION NEIGHBORHOOD

Located north of the center of Nice, the Liberation district is a little less known by tourists and for this reason it has remained authentic. I advise you to get lost in the alleys and clubs.

RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL OF NICE

The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Nice is wonderful and worth checking out. It is also possible to visit the interior of the cathedral.

How to get there? It is not far from Nice’s main station so you can reach it on foot or by bus number 8 which leaves from the center of Nice.

WHAT TO EAT DURING A WEEKEND IN NICE

Here are the specialties you absolutely must try in Nice:

Socca and Panisse: they are simple dishes, perfect for street food, made with chickpea flour.
Pissaladière: pie with onions and anchovies, it is also very common in Liguria and other areas of the French Riviera.
Salade niçoise: the salad that made history! Based on tuna, tomatoes, green salad and other raw vegetables, anchovies, boiled eggs, Nice olives and of course olive oil vinaigrette. Light, but complete.
Pan Bagnat: a sandwich version of the niçoise salad: tuna and/or anchovies, raw vegetables, boiled eggs, Nice olives and olive oil, all in a round bread.

Eat an ice cream in Nice.

Nice calls ice cream, it will be hot, it will be the sea, but when you go to Nice you want ice cream. Ice creams in Nice, however, cost much more than the Italian ice creams we are used to, so it’s worth choosing an ice cream shop that really deserves it, I recommend CESAR, beautiful as well as good ice creams.

BEACHES IN NICE

Nice beach is characterized by large pebbles. Although the view and the sea are beautiful, for lovers of sandy beaches it is necessary to move a little further. You have to go towards Antibes (about half an hour drive from Nice) to find them.

But if you like lying on the beach in Nice, you can go to the Castle beach (Castel Plage), located at the foot of the Castle Hill.

Other beaches that are worth a visit around Nice are Villefranche sur Mer or Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

WHEN TO GO TO NICE

The best time to visit Nice in its splendor would be the Nice Carnival, the largest carnival in France and one of the most famous in the world, which takes place every February and lasts 2 weeks.

Obviously, being a city on the sea, in summer it gives its best, even if its position and its mild climate make it an excellent destination even during the winter months.

CONCLUSIONS

Whether for a weekend or a week at the beach, Nice will not disappoint you. It manages to be elegant, relaxing, fun and warm all at the same time!

HOW TO ORGANIZE AN ACCESSIBLE TRAVEL IN JAPAN

During our last trip to Japan, we organized an excursion to Mount Takao, not far from Tokyo, together with OHAYO Travel and Tokyo Universal Tourism Center.

On Mount Takao you can enjoy a small break from the hectic Tokyo and have a picnic with many Japanese families while admiring the view.

We were impressed with their attention and interest in the world of accessible travel. They were able to organize our accessible itinerary and above all to better manage all the needs and program changes that during a trip represent the rule and not the exception.
